New app protects outdoor workers

UN agency the ILO is promoting a phone app that can help workers outdoor measure their exposure to harmful sunlight.

The SunSmart Global UV app flags up when sun protection is required and is being launched by the ILO, World Health Organization (WHO), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Globally, it is estimated that more than 1.5 million cases of skin cancer were diagnosed in 2020. During the same period more than 120,000 people worldwide lost their lives as a result of this preventable disease.

“This app is a useful tool to assist companies and workers in identifying hazardous work and planning safety and health measures,” explained Vera Paquete-Perdigão, director of the ILO’s Governance and Tripartism, Department.

“On 10 June the International Labour Conference adopted a resolution recognising a safe and healthy work environment as a new fundamental principle and right at work. It is a global call for increased efforts to prevent work-related injuries and diseases.”

The app is available free of charge from the Apple App and Google Play stores.
