CWU appeals over Royal Mail strike ban

The CWU communication workers’ union has formally lodged an appeal against a High-Court ruling banning 110,000 postal workers from going on strike.

The union is seeking to overturn an injunction against strike action at Royal Mail.

In a clear example of just how Conservative government legislation has tilted the balance in the workplace even more towards the employer, the High Court granted the injunction despite more than 97% of CWU members voting for action on a 75.9% turnout.

The dispute is focused on workers’ concerns over the casualisation of the Royal Mail and the potential undermining of pensions and conditions.

CWU general secretary Dave Ward told the Morning Star newspaper: “Appealing this decision is the right thing to do. Not only for our members, but for all workers.

“After the outrage of last week we have moved quickly onto the next phase of our dispute.

“We have prepared a letter to all shareholders, will be holding a national briefing of our representatives and on Friday we have called a union meeting in every office. We shall not be moved.”
