Strike called over use of casual workers

Strike action and a work to rule were being planned by Ministry of Defence marine support workers employed by private contractor Serco as Labour Research went to press, in a dispute over jobs for casual workers.

The workers are employed at Falmouth, Devonport, Portsmouth, Faslane and Great Harbour on the Clyde, working on the tugs and supporting ships that provide fresh water and sanitary services to warships in naval training areas.
