Jobless low before election

Labour will be boosted in the election campaign by relatively low unemployment, the count remaining below the one million mark in April. The number of unemployed claimants fell by 10,200 to 975,8000 - a jobless rate of 3.2%.

Since April 1997, just before the last election, unemployment has fallen by over 700,000.
