Inflation highest for 19 years

Inflation has reached its highest level for almost 19 years. In April, the annual rise in the Retail Prices Index reached 5.3% against 4.4% the previous month.

Numerous factors contributed to the increase including dearer housing costs. The April figure also includes the rises in the duties on the likes of tobacco and alcohol that were introduced in the March Budget.
