Inflation dips

Inflation — as measured by the Retail Prices Index (RPI) — fell to 3.1% in July from 3.3% the previous month.

The RPI inflation rate is used to calculate changes to rail fares. Regulated fares will go up by the July inflation rate plus 1%, that means a 4.1% hike for some passengers from next January.

Under the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) — inflation dipped to 2.8% in July from 2.9% the previous month.
