Challenging ‘gig’ insecurity

This year’s annual general meeting of the Labour Research Department on 15 May will hear from guest speaker Mick Rix, national officer at the GMB general union responsible for organising in Uber, the app-based car hire company.

Last October, with the union’s backing, Uber drivers successfully persuaded the Central London Employment Tribunal that they are workers entitled to employment rights.

The case is one of a growing number in which the insecurity of “gig economy” work is being challenged.

The AGM, which starts at 2.00pm, will be held at Jerwood Space, Union Street, London SE1 0LN. All affiliated organisations and individuals are entitled to attend.
