Inflation jumps up

Retail price inflation is rising at its highest rate for over five-and-a-half years.

In August, the annual inflation rate under the Retail Prices Index (RPI) — the inflation measure favoured by union negotiators — was up to 3.9% from 3.6% the previous month. The last time it reached 3.9% was in January 2012.

Under the government’s preferred CPIH measure, inflation was up to 2.7% in August from 2.6% in July.
