Green pension push

Public services union UNISON has launched a campaign to encourage local government pension funds to make greener investment decisions. Five million members and over 13,000 different employers pay into the pension funds.

The union says the campaign’s aim is to get funds “to explore alternative investment opportunities, allowing schemes to sell their shares and bonds in fossil fuels and to go carbon-free”.

Last year, local government pension funds invested £16 billion in the fossil fuel industry.
