Ryanair


Low-cost airline carrier Ryanair has been hit by industrial action in several of its key markets. 


Last month, there were two days of strikes by cabin crew in Spain, Belgium and Portugal, one day in Italy, and three days of strikes by pilots based in Ireland where the company has its headquarters. The action led to the cancellation of around 300 flights a day. 


Cabin crew are demanding improved terms and conditions and, for the 1,800 or so Spanish employees, one of the key demands is that their conditions be set on the basis of Spanish labour law rather than Irish labour law, as is the case at present. 


Ryanair cabin crew in Germany have made progress as the company has agreed to start negotiations on their pay and conditions with Germany’s second largest union, Ver.di, and may agree to talk to Ufo, another union representing cabin crew. 


Ryanair agreed in June to recognise the Unite union for cabin crew in the UK.
