Members of the Unite general union at Luton airport last month suspended industrial action the day before a 60-hour strike was due to begin. A revised offer on pay and conditions from Menzies Aviation is to be put to the Luton baggage handlers, check-in and boarding staff.


In Manchester, Unite members working in security at the city’s airport suspended their industrial action ballot after management concluded discussions resulting in an amended and improved roster which will be recommended for acceptance. 


However, Manchester Metrolink tram workers are being balloted for action which could see drivers on the tram network strike over the August bank holiday and during Manchester Pride. 


Unite says the drivers are angry over a “substandard” pay offer and pay levels that see them earning up to £7,000 less per year than counterparts in other cities across the UK doing the same job.


Unite is urging Metrolink bosses to table a revised offer during talks which are being facilitated by the Acas conciliation service.


Meanwhile, Eurostar station staff based at St Pancras were due to strike for 24 hours in a dispute over dangerous working conditions resulting from repeated service failures and breakdowns.


The RMT rail union said these have reduced the international terminal to chaos, with staff left to bear the brunt of public anger.


The union has also confirmed that it is escalating the dispute and will begin balloting train managers over the same issues.
