Health & Safety Matters

Tackling slavery

New Scottish government guidance, Slavery and human trafficking: guidance for business in Scotland, recognises the vital role unions can play in tackling slavery. The advice has been drafted with the help of the Scottish TUC (STUC).

STUC general secretary Grahame Smith said: “We are keen to ensure that trade unions play an important role in preventing trafficking and exploitation by raising awareness within the workforce of issues of Fair Work.”

Fair Work is work that, among other things, offers opportunity and security.

Smith said that union reps are trained to “actively scrutinise issues in the workplace around pay, health and safety and working conditions which are all indicators of trafficking”.
