Protest at Teesside biomass plant

In December, members of the GMB general union staged protests outside a biomass plant in Teesside over suspicions that the employer has brought in cheaper labour from overseas.

Babcock Wilcox Velund is building the plant and has awarded a contract to Polish firm Thermika which brought in its own labour on what the GMB says are worse terms and conditions.

GMB organiser Tom Allison said: “Thermika are trying to bury their heads in the sand and offer workers in North Tees crumbs from their table — and it’s not good enough.”
