Video game workers launch union branch

The UK’s first ever union branch for video game workers has been officially launched by the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB), as foreshadowed in Labour Research last year (see Labour Research, November 2018, pages 10-12).

The aim of the Games Workers Unite branch is “to tackle the wide-scale exploitation now common in one of the fastest-growing sectors in the UK economy,” says the IWGB. This exploitation includes the use of excessive, often unpaid overtime, known as “crunch”, zero-hours contracts, a lack of diversity and a culture of homophobia and sexism.
