Inflation ratchets up

In January, the annual inflation rate under the Retail Prices Index was up to 2.7% from 2.2% at the end of 2019.Inflation under the Consumer Prices Index Housing (CPIH), which includes housing costs, was pushed up to 1.8% from 1.4%, while the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) was up to 1.8% from 1.3%.

The rise was largely the result of higher petrol pump prices, while air fares fell by less than a year ago, said the Office for National Statistics.
