Price indexes rise again

Dearer furniture, travel and energy costs helped push inflation up in December to its highest rate since June 1998. The Retail Prices Index rose by 3.5% compared to 3.4% the previous month - the third consecutive monthly rise.

The government's preferred measure - the Consumer Prices Index (CPI), which excludes housing costs - also rose, to 1.6%.
