CWU advises on floods

Following the recent downpours, the CWU communication workers’ union has issued advice for safety reps in flood-affected areas.

Members are advised not to try to walk, wade or swim through floodwater, because of the danger of slipping, being struck by an object or being infected by sewage. Driving through flooded areas is also vetoed, because “two feet of water will float a car or van away – even if you are in a large goods vehicle, it can still be swept away”.

After floods have receded, reps should ensure that workplace premises are jointly inspected before being re-occupied – with safety checks carried out by competent persons.
