NUJ campaigns against FT’s workloads

Members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the Financial Times newspaper stepped up their campaign against unsustainable workloads last month with a day of action.

The union says that cuts in the number of editorial staff combined with increased workloads as a result of the introduction of new technologies have resulted in unacceptable pressures on its members. The union chapel is carrying out a survey of stress levels among the workforce.

The day of action saw NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear address a meeting of union members at the paper where he warned: “Management need to listen carefully to their journalists: they’re the people who know what counts when it comes to quality, and they’re saying that current situation is unsafe and unprofessional.”
