Commute times fall

Commuting time has reduced to a 10-year low, according to analysis by the TUC published to coincide with the Work Wise Commute Smart Week earlier this month. The average commute is 47 minutes and 48 seconds per day, down from its high in 2006 of 52 minutes and 36 seconds.

The TUC attributes this fall in part to the growth of home-working. The data shows that an additional 291,000 workers began working from home between 2006 and 2008, representing 232,000 commuting hours per day in 2008 alone.
