Voluntary sector

Union membership in the voluntary sector is rising because of worries over job security. The Guardian newspaper reports that union density in the sector is now 22%.

It says both the UNISON and Unite unions report an increase in recruits, partly because of public sector cuts which have a knock-on effect on the community and not-for-profit sectors.

The new members come from both professional and unqualified areas of work.
