Glasgow fight for justice over equal pay

Glasgow Pay Justice campaigners are challenging City Council leader Susan Aitken over her decision to seek leave to appeal against an important equal pay ruling secured earlier this year. The Scottish Court of Session confirmed that women had been discriminated against and many of Glasgow’s female employees want to see that followed through.

Protesters including many from the GMB and UNISON unions gathered outside City Chambers on 14 September to demand that the council should settle, not appeal. In an open letter to Aitken, GMB Scotland highlighted her election manifesto commitment to resolve the city’s longstanding pay inequality problems. It said: “We know the mess that is equal pay isn’t your fault – but you are the leader of Glasgow City Council today and you do have the power to fix it”.

Brian Smith of UNISON accused the council of delaying and council officers of not treating the issue as seriously as they should.
