Police merger on hold

Train drivers’ union ASLEF has welcomed the Scottish government’s decision to put the controversial merger of the British Transport Police (BTP) with Police Scotland on hold. The union said it should now “call off this disastrous merger for good”.

ASLEF Scotland organiser Kevin Lindley said: “BTP in Scotland understands the way the railway works and has the special expertise needed to deal with the special problems encountered on the railway every day.”

The merger was due in April 2019, but, according to the union, Police Scotland admitted that date cannot be met “without compromising public safety”.
