Health & safety - HSE Monitor

Enforce stress standards

The Mental Health Foundation charity is calling for stronger government and HSE action to ensure employers treat physical and psychological hazards in the workplace equally.

A YouGov survey found that over the last year, almost three-quarters (74%) of people have at some point felt so stressed they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope. But it says there are not the same attitudes and behaviours towards psychological hazards as there are for physical hazards, such as hazardous chemicals.

Its report, It’s stress: are we coping, calls for “an increase in enforcement of breaches, and the development of appropriate case law and precedents to enable staff to use in practice the rights they have in law to be protected from harm”.
