Pension membership

The number of workers who belong to occupational pension schemes has continued to grow, following the spread of auto-enrolment to even the smallest firms. However, employer plus employee contribution levels into private sector “defined contribution” (DC) schemes were down to 3.4% from 4.2% in 2016.

These figures, which exclude membership of personal pension schemes, include 8.8 million active members in the private sector (7.7 million in DC schemes) and 6.3 million in public sector schemes.
