HSE Talking Toolkit just part of tackling stress

TUC head of health and safety Hugh Robertson has warned that a new HSE Talking Toolkit on preventing work-related stress must be a part of a bigger employer-wide initiative to tackle stress.

The new toolkit is intended for use by line-managers and based on the HSE stress management standards. If used properly, Robertson says, it could make a big difference in the workplace. But he warns that “preventing stress is something best done collectively across the organisation, not just individually”, and that “in many workplaces the line manager has no power to make the kind of changes the toolkit suggests”.

He called on the HSE and local authorities to start taking enforcement action against employers who do not take action to reduce stress. Without this he said the effect of any guidance will be limited.
