Landmark recognition win for GMB

In a landmark case, the GMB general union has won statutory recognition on behalf of around 100 workers at the Jarrow-based care home Careline Lifestyles (UK).

Recognition was awarded when Careline failed to comply with an order from the Central Arbitration Committee (CAC) to provide the names and addresses of the workers in the already-defined bargaining unit. This information was required after the union was allowed to invoke a specific section under the statutory recognition schedule which allows it to communicate with workers in a bargaining unit via a third party.

Careline declined to provide the information on its employees, despite being warned by the the CAC, which then issued a “remedial order”, declaring the union to be recognised without any further delay.
