Increase in compensation for injury to feelings

The sums that can be awarded by an employment tribunal for injury to feelings in discrimination cases — known as Vento bands — increased this month.

The sums payable for claims presented on or after 6 April were uprated by the March inflation rate as measured by the Retail Prices Index.

The upper band — for the most serious cases — is from £26,300 to £44,000, but in the most exceptional cases the payment can exceed £44,000.

The middle band for cases that don’t merit a top award now runs from £8,800 to £26,300. The lower band covering less serious cases ranges from £900 up to £8,800.
