Equity union expands into new areas

Performers’ union Equity has seen a rise of over 2,500 in its membership over the last year, reaching a record total of 48,100.

The union, which organises in what organiser Paul Fleming calls “the original gig economy”, and has had to adapt to new ways of organising. Fleming says: “In the more precarious, emerging and itinerant areas of the industry we are creating new and flexible structures.” Equity now has open networks for models, puppeteers, dancers, circus and burlesque performers, immersive theatre workers and comedians.
