Spain’s public servants get promised 2.0%

More than 3.2 million public servants in Spain are receiving a 2.0% pay increase this January — one of the first acts of the new coalition government of the social-democratic PSOE and the left-wing Unidas Podemos parties.

The increase, which is well above the current inflation rate of 0.8% (December 2019), was promised by the previous right-wing government in 2018 as part of a three-year settlement, and the government, which only secured a majority on 7 January 2020, has acted rapidly to ensure that it is paid.
