New regulations on decent work in fishing

UK regulations to implement the International Labour Organization (ILO) work in fishing convention and bring decent work to the industry have been welcomed by maritime union Nautilus International.

The regulations entitle all workers in the fishing industry to written terms and conditions of employment, decent accommodation and food, regulated working time and health and safety on board. It also provides minimum standards relating to mandatory certification of medical fitness to work on a fishing vessel.

The ILO convention applies to all fishers working on fishing vessels of any size, with more prescriptive standards for vessels over 24m in length or operating on voyages of three days or more.
