A total rise of 3.6%, with a minimum increase of £450 for all staff at the Medical Research Council (MRC) (except those who received a "N" rating) has been agreed, and backdated to 1 August. The increase was based on 1.6% for inflation and 2% for progression for all staff who had performed satisfactorily. London allowances were increased (inner up 1.6% to £2,531, intermediate up 3.6% to £1,237) but a new unconsolidated central London supplement was also introduced for all MRC staff who receive inner London allowance. This non-pensionable supplement is initially worth £500pa but rises to £1,000 from August 2002, and is paid quarterly. The package included pay protection for staff at or above their pay band maximum and the final stage in the consolidation of an existing supplement. The pay structure includes a guaranteed progression point set at 10% above the minimum for each pay band.
