New learning centres open

Two new learning centres involving trade unions in local partnerships were opened in Wales this month.

The centre in Neath Port Talbot involves engineering and electricians' union Amicus, the Wales TUC and local private and public sector organisations. The one in Newtown, Powys is the result of a collaboration between shopworkers' union USDAW and one of the largest employers in Powys - the Reality Group, together with the Wales TUC and the Workers' Education Association at Coleg Harlech.

The TUC said: "Learning, with a trade union badge, is fast becoming best practice across Wales because unions can succeed in capturing the interest and commitment of many people who would not otherwise have a go at formal learning."
