HSC consults on strategy

The HSC has launched a consultation discussing the methods used by the HSE and local authorities to influence health and safety standards in the workplace.

The consultation addresses a key theme in the HSC's strategy, launched in February - namely the development of an "interventions strategy", establishing the main techniques it will use as a regulator.

TUC head of health and safety Hugh Robertson welcomed the debate on enforcement, but warned that the TUC will "resist any move of resources from those methods we know work - inspection and prosecution - to 'softer' approaches, just because of pressure from employers".

The consultation document, Regulation and recognition - towards good performance in health and safety, can be obtained from the HSE by phoning 0151 951 4868 or visiting www.hse.gov.uk/consult/condocs/cd-interventions.htm. The consultation closes on 24 December.
