Bid to increase size of autistic workforce

The National Autistic Society (NAS) has launched 'The Undiscovered Workforce', an employment campaign aimed at increasing the number of people with autism in the workplace.

The NAS intends to raise awareness of Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) by distributing information packs for employers explaining what ASD is, the skills and benefits that ASD employees can bring to their work, and how to make adjustments for them.

Also available are a pack for jobseekers with autism, and a video on supported employment containing case studies, best practice and real-life examples.

The NAS will also be hosting a series of "business breakfasts" with employers in the New Year, to educate them on the issues of employing ASD workers.

Research by the NAS in 2001 revealed that only 6% of adults with autism were in full-time employment.

Union reps are being encouraged to make their employers aware of the campaign and of ASD. TUC disability policy officer Peter Purton said: "The TUC has been working hard to improve employment prospects for all disabled workers, and we welcome this campaign."
