Journalists' health at risk

An new report published by the NUJ media union has revealed that work-related pressures are causing significant mental and physical health problems among journalists.

The well-being initiative is the result of an NUJ survey into its freelance sector in 2004. This found that freelancers spent nearly 70% of their time working at home, with over half (55%) admitting that isolation was a problem. Nearly all (87%) worked at weekends and evenings, with many experiencing overwork and deadline pressures.

Depression was a significant issue, with nearly half (48%) experiencing it; lack of work was seen as a major cause. And around a third (35%) were dependent on alcohol, tobacco, medications or other substances.
