Breakthrough in pay for demolition workers

Demolition workers are to receive pay rises totalling 11% over two years, in a deal agreed last month between the National Federation of Demolition Contractors and the GMB, T&G and UCATT construction unions.

Pay was increased across the board by 5.5% on 20 July, bringing the hourly rate for a Grade 1 labourer to £6.68. Grade 2 operatives now receive £7.10 an hour, and Grade 3 operatives (topmen) £7.72. Another 5.5% increase will follow next July.

Sick pay has also been improved, to £92.50 per week, with a reduction in waiting days before it becomes payable.

Subsistence allowance is now £35 a night, and travel money has been increased by 5%.

Workers with two years' service have had their holiday entitlement increased by a day, while those with four years' service get two days.
