Don't punish illegal immigrants, say Swedes

The Swedish union confederation LO, which primarily organises manual workers, has proposed an end to the current system of fining migrants who work illegally in Sweden.

Instead it wants their employers to be fined an amount at least equivalent to the difference between their wages and normal wages in the sector involved.

LO says it welcomes people coming from other countries to work: "The real criminals are unscrupulous employers and agents who make a profit out of people's vulnerability."
