RMT demands action on hazardous substances

The RMT rail union is warning its safety reps to be vigilant on the issue of hazardous substances, and to "ensure that any problems that arise are raised promptly with management".

The move comes in the wake of the RMT's conference in July, where concerns were raised at employers' failure to provide information and consult safety reps on hazardous substances.

In a circular to branches, RMT general secretary Bob Crow reminded safety reps of employers' duty to carry out a risk assessment and to review it "whenever there is reason to believe it is no longer valid" - for example, because the method of work has changed. Even if no significant change has taken place, he added, reps should seek a review every five years.
