Survey finds BAME workers lacking PPE

More than one in four BAME workers had not been given necessary person protective equipment (PPE), according to a survey by the general GMB union.

According to the union, of 516 respondents who had been advised by their employer that they needed PPE, 141 said that it had not been provided in full.

The survey, which attracted 761 responses, also found that:

• two in three who raised health and safety concerns with their employer didn’t have them fully addressed;

• more than half said social distancing measures were not being adhered to in their workplaces; and

• 54% of members have not had an individual risk assessment.

In response the GMB has called on the government to take additional steps to protect Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority workers - including underwriting sick pay for vulnerable workers and making individual risk assessments mandatory.
