Building site safety

Small building sites are a health and safety “basket case,” said construction union UCATT last month. The union was responding to the chief executive’s report to the board of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in December.

HSE inspectors visited 1,840 small construction sites over four months last year. They found that almost half of these (49%) were unsafe and had to take immediate action over issues such as a failure to work safely at height and to deal with asbestos in a risk-free way.

UCATT acting general secretary Brian Rye said: “This shows that safety standards on small construction sites remain a basket case."
