Southern rail strikes suspended

Three strike days on Southern rail, scheduled for 24, 25 and 27 January, were called off as the rail operator and the Aslef train drivers’ union agreed to have talks to end the long-running dispute.

Aslef offered to suspend industrial action over driver-only trains if the company agreed to new talks hosted by TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady.

Andy Meadows, HR director of rail firm Abellio also chaired the talks alongside O’Grady. Previous talks have so far failed to make any breakthroughs in the dispute. In a joint statement, O’Grady and Meadows said they were “committed to finding a fair solution”.

As Labour Research went to press, the RMT rail union, which is in a separate dispute with Southern over the role of conductors, had taken strike action on 23 January and was calling for access to the talks.
