Inflation rises

Dearer petrol and rising food prices have taken inflation to a three-year high.

Under the Retail Prices Index (RPI) — the measure favoured by union negotiators — the annual inflation rate was up to 2.6% in January 2017 from 2.5% in December 2016.

Under the Consumer Prices Index — the government’s preferred measure — the annual rate of inflation was up to 1.8% from 1.6% over the same period.
