Charity sees struggling workers

Public service union UNISON’s welfare charity awarded 600 members struggling to pay for heating over £30,000 in the latest year.

The charity, There For You, has seen a steep rise in requests for help this year, with 810 people applying compared with 583 the year before. The charity said nearly two-thirds of applicants said their joints ache, and half said they struggle to sleep because of the cold. Seven in 10 said that needing to pay for heating meant they didn’t buy clothes, while half cut back on food costs.

Head of There For You Julie Grant said: “Something is starkly amiss with the UK’s economy if people who work every waking hour have to choose between turning the heating on or buying food.”
