Blacklisting

The government has turned down a call to bar blacklisting companies from undertaking public sector contracts.

Replying to a letter on the matter from SNP MP Chris Stephens, junior business minister Margot James said: “It is up to individual contracting authorities to apply these measures and take steps to be confident in the current practices of their contractors.”

Scottish law prohibits public authorities from awarding contracts to contractors who have breached the blacklisting regulations, but this is not the case in England.

The government’s refusal comes at a time when the Unite general union is fighting cases of contemporary blacklisting.
