Air pollution near schools

More than 2,000 schools and nurseries across the country are located close to roads with illegal levels of air pollution, but only one in three councils are monitoring these levels, says the National Education Union and the British Lung Foundation.

The two organisations have joined forces to produce a new guide to warn school staff and pupils about the dangers of air pollution and offer practical solutions to protect young children, who are most at risk.

Air pollution guidance for school staff encourages the development of action plans to protect pupils’ health — including installing air pollution monitors to show when toxic air is at its worst — and sets out measures to tackle the problem.
