Living standards

Workers’ are still seeing their living standards being cut, even though the gap between growth in average weekly earnings and retail price inflation closed in July.

Earnings growth was up to 3.1% in July from 2.0% the previous month. But inflation under the Retail Prices Index rose by 3.2% in July and by 3.4% in June. That meant earnings, in real terms, were 0.1 percentage points lower in July and 1.4 percentage points lower in June.
