Amazon offsets
 pay increase

Global retail giant Amazon faced heavy criticism last month after it emerged a pay increase announced for its workforce would be offset by the removal of employee share and incentive schemes, costing some workers £1,500 in a year.

Amazon had announced an increase to minimum wage rates of £10.50 an hour for workers in London, and £9.50 an hour for those outside London.

But according to the GMB general union, employees at Amazon warehouse sites across the country have been left seething after the company’s public relations effort failed to mention the significant cut to their income. Tim Roache, GMB general secretary, said the company’s move was “basically a stealth tax by the employer on its own wage increase”.
