Just transition

Unions must be at the forefront of the emission reduction strategies needed to avoid catastrophic climate change if there is to be a “just transition” to a low-carbon economy, a new report sets out.

A just transition aims to secure the future and livelihoods of workers and communities when economies are shifting to sustainable production.

A new International Labour Organization report, Just transition towards environmentally sustainable economies and societies, says meeting the climate change targets set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement will lead to major changes affecting jobs, working conditions, skills and job prospects.

The report includes case studies from across the world and examines both positive and negative experiences to aid trade union strategies in this area.
