BA pay claim is ‘unprecedented’

Three unions have joined forces to submit an “unprecedented” pay claim to British Airways.

Unite, BALPA and the GMB said the airline has allowed employees to become disconnected from its success at a time that the organisation has undergone a remarkable transformation, moving from a £230 million operating loss in 2009 to a £1.8 billion profit in 2017.

An even better result is forecast for 2018.

The unions have teamed up to seek improvements to pay from January, as well as enhanced profit-sharing arrangements and the introduction of an employee share ownership scheme.Negotiations were due to commence in December.

In a joint statement, Unite national officer Oliver Richardson, BALPA head of industrial relations John Moore and GMB national officer Mick Rix said BA “is continuing to deliver extraordinary financial results.

“BA staff made an essential contribution to this success by delivering change and increasing productivity,” the statement said.

“The joint union pay claim is designed to re-establish this connection between financial success and staff reward.”
