Lecturers’ union to elect new leader

An election procedure is underway for a new general secretary for the University and College Union (UCU) following the resignation of former leader Sally Hunt on health grounds.

The election process, which sees balloting open on 29 April, was agreed at an emergency national executive committee meeting last month despite some objections.

Some felt that the election should be deferred until new arrangements for the general secretary — currently being discussed — have been agreed at this year’s UCU congress.

These are aimed at increasing the general secretary’s accountability following a controversy at the 2018 congress which led to a walkout of staff.
